Since June 2006, the School of Yantalo [547 children from ages 7 to 17] has a full time nurse to take care of common health issues: sport injures, menstrual, gastro-intestinal and common cold issues. Access to medications is still a problem due to overall central government budget conditions. Since 01.nov.06, most common medications have been made available for the children and faculty of the School, via international donations [“sponsor medicines” for ONE month program].
In June 2006, the Council of the City Hall of Yantalo donated a 3-acre lot for the construction of an 8 to 10 bed facility: the Centro Medico Yantalo.
In May 2006, a pediatrician from the USA visited Yantalo and identified a 12 year old child with a congenital nasal condition with serious bone deformation. With the help of this visiting Doctor, arrangements have been made to take this child to St Luis, MO for reconstructive surgery with all of the following expenses fully paid: transportation from Peru, surgery and a 2-week post surgery care. This has been possible thanks to the participation Dr Jeffrey Marsh, surgeon and of the Healing for Children Foundation, MO Chapter.
At the same time the visiting Dr also diagnosed an auditory problem on the left ear in a 15-year old girl. With the assistance of a Peruvian doctor, the girl will travel to Lima and her condition will be treated at the Japanese-Peruvan institution free of charge!.
