C. Luis Vásquez  was born in Lima, Peru. Luis is now a retired cardiologist. While attending medical school and after graduation, he worked at the Cardiology Department of a Lima Charity Hospital with clinical and teaching responsibilities. Also and on a charity basis, Luis worked in small communities affected by earthquakes and other natural disasters. He was Medical Consultant for Latin America for ICI Pharmaceuticals from England. Luis has traveled extensively in Peru and in Latin America since 1960.  He now resides in the Chicago area and is still active in business with his wife Mary.  Luis promotes Medical Meetings, Continuing Medical Education [CME] programs and special Cultural Tours to Latin America via a travel organization he founded in Illinois in 1981. In 2006, The Yantalo Peru Foundation received IRS approval.

Luis’s mother was born in Yantalo, a very poor community in the Peruvian Amazon Jungle [6°S, 77°W, elevation 2700 feet]. Yantalo with a popuilation of close to 3000 people, is the center of activities for the Foundation.

Mary Vásquez was born in LaCrosse, WI, studied her junior college year in Japan. Completed her B.A in Macallester College, MN, and her post graduate at the U of Minnesota. She lived in Peru for ten years where she headed a Study Abroad Program and was Guidance Director at the American F.D. Roosevelt School in Lima. Upon her return to the States, she was the Executive Director of the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program in her home town. She is Founder and President of The Vasquez Group, Inc., [Gurnee, IL] Employee Assistance Program providing services throughout the United States and internationally.

Roberto Vásquez was born in Minneapolis, MN.  During the 1980 Cuban refugee crisis he worked at Ft. McCoy, WI as an interpreter.  He graduated from the University of Illinois in Urbana, IL and obtained his PhD in engineering from Stanford University in CA and an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management.  Roberto worked at Hughes Space and Communications on the design, development and launch of various satellite systems including Thuraya - the first commercially successful satellite-based mobile phone system.  He is currently a vice president at Science Applications International Corporation and runs a P&L business line focused on the space industry.

Mario Vásquez was born in Lima, Peru. He graduated from the U of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign (1990) in Mechanical Engineering and obtained a full scholarship for his MBA at NYU (2000) with a dual concentration in Finance and Management.  His work in E.I. DuPont included Engineering, Sales & Marketing, Operations, and Finance. He currently works for Invista Co and is responsible for Business Strategy and Mergers, Acquisitions & Divestitures. Mario has traveled extensively throughout South America, Europe and Asia. Was the president of a regional chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and received a nationally recognized award for community service.

Ian Vásquez was born in Lima, Peru. He received his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL and his master’s degree from the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC. He is the director of the Project on Global Economic Liberty at the Cato Institute in Washington, DC, where he oversees and produces research on economic development.  He is the editor of Global Fortune: The Stumble and Rise of World Capitalism (2000) and coeditor of Perpetuating Poverty: The World Bank, the IMF and the Developing World (1994). Vásquez has been a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is a member of the Mont Pèlerin Society.

Dr. Jerry Friedman is a Board Certified Pediatrician.  He completed his internship and residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami School of Medicine.  He attended the Premature Care Institute of Cornell Medical Center.  He was responsible for the establishment of an indigent care pediatric center at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center, caring for 10,000 children visits annually.   He is married, with three children and four grandchildren. 

Gerry Friedman, a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, is the wife of Dr. Jerry Friedman.  She has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Goucher College and a Masters Degree in Urban Affairs from Washington University in St. Louis.  Although she considers herself a “professional mom and grandmother”, her background includes work in public relations and advertising, land development and urban revitalization.
